A Brief Journey

The roots of the Indian Culture Portal lie in the National Mission on Libraries (NML), which included the National Virtual Library of India (NVLI) as a key component. NVLI aimed to bring together information generated in India and about India and make it accessible through a user-friendly digital platform.

On 10 December 2019, the Indian Culture Portal was launched by the Ministry of Culture. Developed with the technical involvement of IIT Bombay and data curation by IGNOU, the portal brought together cultural resources from museums, libraries, archives, cultural institutions and heritage organisations.

Over the years, ICP expanded from a digital repository to a cultural knowledge platform by adding curated content, thematic collections, photo essays, stories and immersive experiences such as virtual walkthroughs and 3D explorations.

The biggest milestone came on 5 March 2026 with the launch of Indian Culture Portal 2.0, a major technological upgrade to enhance accessibility, search, engagement and multilingual support.

ICP is a comprehensive digital platform that brings together India's tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
