Elsevier LeapSpace: A New Direction for Research-Grade AI

Research Technology · Generative AI

LeapSpace is an AI-assisted research workspace from Elsevier designed to help researchers explore scholarly literature, investigate complex questions, compare findings and move through different stages of the research process.

It combines AI-supported research workflows with scholarly content from Scopus and selected full-text articles and books from Elsevier and other publishers.

Winner: Best Generative AI Solution — 2026 CODiE Awards

Elsevier announced that LeapSpace won this award in the technology industry's long-running peer-reviewed awards programme. Read the official award announcement .

What Is LeapSpace?

LeapSpace brings together AI-assisted discovery, literature exploration, document analysis and research-writing support in one workspace.

For researchers, doctoral scholars, academic librarians and research support teams, its significance lies in connecting AI assistance with scholarly literature. Generated responses should still be checked against original sources and interpreted critically.

LeapSpace by the Numbers

In its announcement dated 16 September 2026, Elsevier described the scale of the scholarly content underpinning LeapSpace using these figures.

23+ million Full-text peer-reviewed articles and books
100+ million Scientific records from Scopus
2.6 billion Cited references from Scopus

7,000+ publishers

Elsevier reports that the Scopus records represented in LeapSpace cover content from more than 7,000 publishers.

56% of recent global research citations

According to Elsevier, its full-text content accounts for this share of recent global research citations.

42% of articles published since 2021

Elsevier reports that its full-text content represents this share of global research articles published since 2021.

Content from multiple publishers

The content foundation includes Elsevier publications and selected full-text content from other scholarly publishers and societies.

Source and interpretation: These figures are reported by Elsevier in its official announcement of 16 September 2026. The 56% and 42% figures are based on Elsevier's analysis using Scopus in June 2026. They are publisher-reported estimates, not independently audited measurements. The 100+ million Scopus records should not be interpreted as 100+ million full-text documents; the full-text figure is reported separately.

Key Features and Research Applications

AI-Assisted Research Discovery

Explore research questions, refine searches and identify relevant scholarly literature across topics and disciplines.

Deep Research

Investigate a topic in greater depth by examining perspectives, patterns, possible contradictions and evidence gaps across relevant literature.

Reading Assistant

Ask questions about supported articles, book chapters and PDFs to clarify ideas, understand sections and identify useful points.

Compare and Compare Tables

Compare research papers, methods, findings and limitations to organise evidence for literature reviews and research planning.

Writing Coach and Claim Radar

Review arguments, identify possible evidence gaps and examine claims against relevant research. Researchers remain responsible for the accuracy of the final text.

Authors and Funding

Explore researcher profiles, discover potential collaborators and investigate funding opportunities using the features available in the platform.

Feature availability may depend on the user's plan, institutional access, document availability and current product configuration. Consult Elsevier's documentation for the latest details.

A Broader Scholarly Content Foundation

In its September 2026 announcement, Elsevier described additional content licensing partnerships intended to broaden the scholarly material available through LeapSpace. These included BMJ Group, JAMA Network, Rockefeller University Press and the American Society of Civil Engineers, as well as selected full-text content from Emerald Publishing, IOP Publishing and Sage Publishing.

Elsevier also reported content from more than 1,500 additional scholarly publishers and societies. The full text available for an individual publication may vary according to licensing and access rights.

Transparency, Trust and Human Oversight

AI-generated research outputs can be useful starting points, but scholarly work requires verifiable evidence. LeapSpace describes features such as source-linked citations and Trust Cards to help users examine how an answer relates to its sources. Claim Radar is designed to help users assess whether research supports, contradicts or presents mixed evidence about a claim.

Elsevier has also announced an independent LeapSpace Advisory Board to provide guidance on algorithms, transparency and publisher-neutral content standards.

Important: Source links and trust indicators do not eliminate the need to read original publications, check methods and citations, assess conflicting findings and apply subject expertise.

Why Should Academic Librarians Pay Attention?

For academic libraries, LeapSpace illustrates how AI is being integrated into scholarly discovery and research-support workflows. Librarians may find it relevant in these areas:

  • Research support: Helping scholars explore a topic and organise the initial stages of a literature review.
  • Information literacy: Teaching users to verify citations, trace claims to original sources and recognise the limitations of AI-generated summaries.
  • Scholarly communication: Discussing AI tools in research writing, evidence synthesis and publication preparation.
  • Library technology evaluation: Comparing AI tools on content coverage, transparency, access conditions, privacy, usability and institutional suitability.
  • Responsible use: Developing guidance that keeps researchers accountable for interpretation, citations and final scholarly outputs.
